Meet the pastor
Pastor Leon Hampton, JR.
Pastor Leon grew up in church in Choctaw County, Alabama, and has spent his life serving God and people—in the pulpit, in the courtroom, and in the River Region. He and his wife, Dr. Tonquita K. Hampton, have two children, Kori and Leon III. He was installed as senior pastor of First Church in 2022.
He would tell you his greatest title is still “follower of Jesus.” We’d love for you to meet him after service.
A Brief history
History on a Bloody Sunday
In 1965, First Church played a significant role as part of the historic Selma to Montgomery March, also known as Bloody Sunday. During the march, travelers by foot stopped at First Church for rest and restoration, spending the night at the church, which allowed marchers to continue their destination to the state capitol, in their fight for voting rights for African-Americans.
